The MHAF Gold Medal, 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) in diameter of gold-plated silver featuring the MHAF logo, will be awarded to the day's Champion in Piobaireachd. Prize moneys include First winning USD $750, Second $500, and Third $250. Competitors must be eligible to apply for the Gold Medal competitions at Oban or Inverness. The piper must submit three tunes from the Piobaireachd Society’s 2009 set tune list. Competitors will be notified of the selected tune prior to entering the final tuning-room. The contest will be held just before the annual MHAF Winter Storm Weekend, January 16 - 18, and that Saturday evening's WINTER STORM 2009: The Pipes & Drums Concert, performed by the workshop faculty; the Champion will also be invited to perform with the winners of the MHAF & MWPBA US Silver Medal Piobaireachd Competition, the Tone Czar Bagpipes - MHAF North American Professional Ceol Beag Competition, the MCDS - MHAF North American Gold Medal Drumming Championship, the Davis Drums - MHAF Gold Medal Bass Drumming Championship, and the MHAF Gold Medal Tenor Drumming Championship.
